Trauma-Informed Coaching
In Trauma-Informed coaching we work with how trauma in your personal life and in the world around us is negatively impacting your ability to live your most authentic, fulfilling life.
In a safe and supportive healing relation, we learn how to transform fear into curiosity, shame into wisdom, anger into agency, anxiety into action. As importantly, we overcome the stigma people often feel when they have lived through traumatic experiences.
Trauma-Informed Coaching helps you to transform the wound into wisdom. At the practical level, we work with the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of trauma in your life. But in a deeper and more transformative way, we learn from trauma: learn about the resilience and intelligence that allowed you to survive, learn how to honor and love yourself, not in spite of, but because of what you have come through.
I know trauma from the inside out. From the inside, I spent my college years and early career as a university professor understanding and working through the traumatic legacy of violence in my own family. From the outside, my extensive research in trauma and memory studies, the neurobiology of trauma, and collective trauma has shown me how our individual experiences are one strand of the trauma that weaves through our social fabric. You can watch a brief overview of how we heal through bearing witness in my TEDx Talk, Bearing Witness: Restoring the Social Fabric.
As a trauma-informed practitioner, my passion is to help you heal the wounds a traumatized world has left in us AND to empower you to bring your own healing into the world as a transformational force. “Healing” is a journey, a creative act of self-making; when we begin this journey, the healing effects ripple out into our families, our relationships, our social circles, our work places. Each small act of healing within ourselves is thus a gift of healing in the world.
For the story of my own life, and how I came to understand that the wounds in my family came from the wounds passed on by generations of violence, you can read my first book, The Wars We Inherit: Military Life, Gender Violence, and Memory.
