Time Travels through Albania: A Love Letter from the Future

My most recent book, Time Travels through Albania: A Love Letter from the Future, shows through the lens of Albania how the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries brought us to the global war on terror and the crises of polarizations, authoritarianism, and radical inequality of the 21st century.  For more on Time Travels, which is currently in the contracting process, see the overview, here.

Healing: A Theory and Practice for New Knowledge Paradigm

My next book will be about how we make Healing the Theory and Practice for a New Way of Knowing.  Our planet and our species are at a pivotal evolutionary moment.  With temperatures rising, glaciers melting, polluted oceans heating up and the severe weather events that are our new norm, all of our old forms must now evolve with our changing planet.  This new world we are entering demands a shift from ego-centric to eco-systemic being, from oppressive power structures to collaborative systems of reciprocal well-being, from exploitation of natural resources to regenerative ways of inhabiting the planet and cohabitating with each other.  In order to make this shift, healing must become the theory and practice for a new knowledge paradigm.  My next book will explore how we do this – how, exactly, does healing become the center of what we know, how we know it, and what we do with our knowing?   My Substack publication, Hope and Healing, explores these themes and provides an interactive forum for you to take up this healing work with me.

Reconsidering Transition: Albania 1990-2020 and the Promise of Democracy

I spent 15 years researching and working with civil society in Albania (2009 – 2023), and was privileged to work with Albania’s leading intellectuals, artists, civil society activists, and change-makers bringing Albania through the transition from communist dictatorship to aspiring democracy.  Reconsidering Transition: Albania 1990 – 2020 and the Promise of Democracy (co-edited with Afrim Krasniqi), is the first English-language interdisciplinary scholarly publication written primarily by the Albanians that led their country through transition.  More than retrospective or critique, Reconsidering Transition analyzes what has gone wrong in the 30 years of post-communist transition so that Albanians may learn from this and chart a better way forward for their people and country.

The Wars We Inherit: Military Life, Gender Violence, and Memory

My first book, The Wars We Inherit: Military Life, Gender Violence, and Memory, shows how the interpersonal violences we live in our home are on a continuum with the systemic, structural violences that organize our world.  I write about this from both personal experience and theoretical expertise.  I am a child of the cold war, born on an army base in the former West Germany to an enlisted soldier who brought the wars he fought in Korea and Vietnam home with him.  I learned first-hand how war is experienced and passed on in families.  I also learned that, underneath of all of the violence we inflict and experience, an open wound is crying to be healed.  Wars charts a path towards this healing – a path that begins with transforming the effects of violence in our own lives so that we may begin to transform the cultural conditions that breed violence.
